David, who lived at Northfields House, passed away shortly after celebrating his birthday in style.
Karen, Service Manager at Northfields, described how her team were determined to ensure David could enjoy the celebrations:
“David was diagnosed with dementia in 2014; this has affected his intellectual functioning and his mobility, with his mobility deteriorating from him being very mobile to requiring the use of wheelchairs, walking frames and hand on hand support. It deteriorated to the point he was unable to get out of bed.
David was 49 when this happened and his 50th birthday was a few weeks away. The team at Northfields had planned on having a big 50th birthday bash for him where all his friends, family, staff and old support staff would come and help him celebrate.
To ensure he could still celebrate and be involved in his birthday, the team needed to support him downstairs from his bedroom on the first floor. It was agreed that a temporary bedroom would be made for him – which was completed just in time for his birthday!
Knowing that we had 24 hours to get David downstairs safely the whole service got to work. The mission began with lots of phoning around and lots of rejection, but we were not going to give up! Finally on Saturday afternoon, we had the ambulance service arrive at 4.30pm to mobilise David from his bed and bring him downstairs, followed shortly by the bed engineers who took his bed apart and moved it downstairs to his new bedroom.
However our mission was not over yet. I worked with my support staff to make the food, David had balloons and personalised bunting decorated throughout the service. However that still was not enough for the team! They wanted to make David’s room even more personalised, so Karen and Becca, Senior Support Worker, started to find pictures of David and life long memories, activities and people he had met throughout the years (as David has been with Regard for the last 20 years, that were a lot of photos!).
During the party David’s favourite Abba CD was playing, he giggled and smiled all the way through cracking the odd joke along the way. It was a memory all everyone will remember and treasure forever. The party was enjoyed by all of David’s family, friends and staff old and new who helped him celebrate this milestone
I am so proud of the Northfields and Two Wells Teams. Everyone pulled together to help a very special man who has touched everyone’s heart, he was truly amazing and we would have gone to the moon and back to make him happy! Now our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
