David, who lives at our Lansdowne Road service in Manchester, was recently supported by the Regard team to take a special day trip to Liverpool. Molly and Lillian discussed travel ideas with David. They knew that he had a fear of flying and that going on a large cruise ship might be over-whelming so it might be better to start by increasing David’s confidence on a day trip. Knowing that one of David’s favourite bands was the Beatles they hit upon the idea of going to Liverpool. Molly and Lillian thought that David would enjoy visiting all The Beatles old haunts and felt that it might be a great opportunity for him to experience being on a boat on the river before taking a full cruise.
Molly said, “David was very excited about the idea and asked lots of questions. We discussed what was involved and David decided that he wanted to experience a Beatles tour and take the ferry across the Mersey. He was extremely excited on the day and thoroughly enjoyed his first time on a boat. For me the highlight was hearing David sing the Beatle’s songs as we travelled around the sights. Hopefully in the future David will have the confidence to enjoy a mini cruise. We will have fun researching ideas with him.”
David wrote an account of the trip:
On the 29.08.16 my key worker Molly and I visited Liverpool for the day. We got the train there from Manchester Victoria and it took one hour to get there. I chose to go to Liverpool because my favourite band, The Beatles were formed there and lots of their songs were to do with different landmarks around Liverpool.
When we arrived in Liverpool we were picked up by taxi and taken on a tour around the city to see the different landmarks such as the ‘Strawberry Fields’, my favourite song by The Beatles. We visited Paul McCartney and Ringo Stars childhood homes and got pictures taken outside of them.
After the tour we got the ferry across the Mersey. It was my first time on a ferry, I was a little bit scared at first as the water was very rough but I soon started to enjoy it. After the ferry I was starving so Molly and I walked down to Albert Docks and had some lunch, it was lovely!
I really enjoyed my day and I am glad I was given the opportunity to visit a new destination.
